For over six years in the 1990’s we started looking for a place to move to for six months every summer whenever Steven was ready to retire from banking to write novels. We spent innumerable weekends with family and friends all over the southwest and western US looking for “we’ll know it when we see it.” To no avail. Then, in the Summer of ’99, the phone rang and one of our closest friends (who had accompanied us on several of those innumerable weekends, a Cheyenne Indian Chief and founding Director of the NMAI) told us “we found your place” on their annual drive from Santa Fe to Cortez. A year later, he called again with the same message. Then in ’01 he called again giving us a third and final notice that “we have found your place and this is our last trip to Cortez.” We got on a plane to Durango, stopped off at the obligatory Malt Shop (he insisted), then the four of us drove to Crowley, and “we knew it when we saw it!” Without telling them, we bought our lot (IIA) and then told them at our annual Christmas get-together for the two families. They were in attendance when the Jicarilla Apache chief from Dulce blessed the land. We’ve never looked back.

My partner and I looked for years for a place to start a new life. From Ecuador, to Portugal, Costa Rica to Mexico. Nothing quite fit what we were looking for. While visiting a friend who had just moved to Crowley, I decided to look at a few lots and one of them, C21, stole my heart. It was fall and, unlike drought stricken California where we were living at the time, flowers and green grass covered the meadow which, days later, became ours.

Things we love about Crowley: It's so quiet and we like all the people we've met, though I don't think we've met even half of our neighbors! (I think Covid has had a lot to do with that!) After coming from the big city (Denver), we really love the peacefulness of this beautiful place! Our stress levels are back down to normal!

Ed and Jim love living on Crowley Ranch Reserve for all the things it offers: an emphasis on wildlife, shared communal property, and neighbors who come from a variety of places and backgrounds. We famously bought our property because we loved the house, without ever seeing, thanks to two rare foggy days, the majestic mountain scenery visible from our windows. Sometimes getting more than you bargained for is a rare treat indeed. We’ve felt that our identity as an interracial gay couple has been met with a sense of welcome and belonging. We hope to continue to be active participants in the evolving Crowley Ranch Reserve community for years to come.

An amazing location that accesses so many parts of the Four Corners of the SW easily, Crowley Ranch Reserve is a piece of our heart. What we bought: geography, scenery, open space and quiet. What we value: a volunteer-oriented community focused on migrating wildlife, native trees and plants, Dark Skies and the Milky Way, cold season sports, ALL four seasons, and finally, a diverse and inclusive group of educated, artistic, athletic, and fun friends.
Thrilled to be here!!!
